Meggitt introduces the next trends in effective law enforcement training: simulation portability and blending live fire with virtual scenarios

Today, police officers, around the world, dedicate themselves to remaining within constitutional frameworks, while enforcing the legal protections of citizens. They must do so at a challenging time when split-second decisions for use of force are routinely required. Training solutions that provide a necessary edge should be more important than ever.

We also supplement our independent research and development with voice-of-customer experience around the world. As a result, we can expedite development of new solutions that address emerging needs. Each of these breakthroughs rests on a proven technological evolution based on extensive testing. Due to our extensive R&D, we recently debuted two all-new products: the FATS® 100P portable virtual training system and the Live-Fire Screen.

The new FATS 100P portable virtual training system: Full-function simulated training you can take with you.

Imagine a lightweight, virtual training system that fits into a carrying case the size of a range bag, yet has all the features and functions you expect from FATS technology. That’s the new FATS 100P, whose compact portability lends itself to unprecedented applications. Share simulation resources across multiple locations, saving money associated with individual training facilities. Hold outreach events that show the stresses of patrolling to activists and other members of the public. Conduct media relations in newsrooms or educational events in schools. Or simply bring top-quality, robust training closer to the field as needed.

Whatever the application, the FATS 100P virtual training system delivers the advanced functionality for both instructor and trainee previously seen only in much larger systems:

  • Enhanced graphic capabilities for an all-encompassing immersive training platform

Facilitating use-of-force training. Most departments and agencies would like to increase use-of-force training, but they can be hampered by logistical requirements. With the FATS 100P, one officer can transport and set up crucial judgmental training anytime, anywhere.

The FATS 100P allows up to six weapon simulators used simultaneously, and comes with more than 250 video scenarios and 1,250 branching options. In conjunction with the scenarios, integrated video authoring allows the instructor to create, edit, score, load and run customer videos locally filmed in familiar locations.

During after-action review, the instructor and trainee can analyze the latter’s actions and discuss proper technique and procedure. Using the feedback, the instructor can identify problematic areas and develop a personalized training plan. Though the FATS 100P is lightweight, the training can still be thorough and memorable.

The new Live-Fire Screen: Blending live fire with hundreds of video scenarios.

Meggitt’s Live-Fire Screen inaugurates a new era of realism in law enforcement training. For the first time, your officers can train on the FATS 100LE or 100MIL virtual training system in a live-fire range using real ammunition. The most advanced device of its kind on the market, the Live-Fire Screen integrates directly into the FATS 100LE or 100MIL with the same software and 16:9 aspect ratio courseware used with Meggitt’s patented BlueFire® wireless weapons.

In fact, while screen integrity is important to display a better picture for the trainee, the material is not required to detect projectiles passing through. The system’s technology provides accurate placement of target hits. The self-healing screen is designed to withstand up to 50,000 rounds (+/-920 shots/sq. ft.) over the entire surface area from a variety of weapons before replacement is necessary.

A lightweight system with powerful hit-detection technology. The logistically simple Live-Fire Screen system includes a sensing bar, rubber screen and deflector assemblies. The sensing bar cameras interface directly with the FATS system and this simplicity empowers the most advanced hit detection in the industry. The Live-Fire Screen’s technology determines the position of a hit, allowing a much shorter time between shots. In fact, we can quantify the delivery of two successive shots faster than any other screens available. Microphone-based systems require approximately 50ms (due to the slower speed of sound compared to speed of light), while thermal-based systems require more than 500ms. Hit location accuracy is +/-0.5” across the entire screen with extreme accuracy in the center. The screen can be used with a variety of live-fire weapons, from revolvers to sub-machine guns for a full range of training.

Practical information on designing your range


Are you protecting yourself, your employees and your customers from Lead Exposure?

For years, many shooting ranges were not aware of the concerns about excessive exposure to lead. After multiple studies and testing, lead problems are now identifiable and easier to combat. Lead can be a silent killer. It builds up in your body's organs and bones, causing permanent, irreversible damage to your body. In most cases, it is not the shooters that are at risk, but rather the employees (ex: instructors and maintenance personnel) that are exposed day-in and day-out to excess levels of lead in a range facility. Proper range ventilation systems are necessary. The biggest dangers of lead exposure are to the people handling the lead cleanup or general range cleanup and maintenance duties.

Whether your range operation is a private, commercial, law enforcement or military type facility, your employees are covered under various laws and regulations that dictate how you need to handle lead-related safety measures. It is not acceptable to just supply a cleanup suit and protection mask for the person that cleans up lead materials from the range. You may be required to keep records of tests (air quality and personnel blood/lead levels), provide training sessions, ensure the proper air supply mask fits correctly, and document the amount and disposition of the lead generated and recovered from the range depending on your local regulations. Some lead is recyclable (from commercial bullet traps and indoor range cleanups), while other lead contaminates are not [from sand berms, filters, air and water], contaminated ranges, etc. All lead must be quantified and disposed of in a safe and responsible manner.   • Under JSP403, NIOSH, OSHA and EPA standards, lead is classified as a highly toxic heavy metal.
  • Develop air quality records to monitor the safety of your range.
  • Conduct lead safety training programs for your team.
  • Teach employees the proper way to handle lead and what to do with the collected lead.
  • Create training records as proof you’re providing a safe working environment for your employees.
  • Offer the proper safety equipment, supplies and direction on how to use these items.
  • Provide a changing area and shower facility to allow your employees to thoroughly wash after exposure.

Q. I’m building a gun range but don’t know what type of material to use for the floor. Any suggestions?

A. The most suitable type of flooring for the range is a smooth, non-absorptive hardened concrete floor from the firing line to the bullet trap. The floor will take a lot of low shots, so a smooth floor results in less erratic ricochets. The firing line and the area behind it are typically covered with vinyl or shredded rubber plank (SRP) flooring that is sealed with a polyurethane coating. Due to environmental considerations, floor drains require filtering systems to collect range contaminates. These systems are typically expensive, so the vast majority of range planners today exclude floor drains and sloped floors from their design. 

Q. What is the industry standard for the length of a gun range?

A. The majority of indoor shooting activities can be conducted on a range that provides 25 meters between the firing line and the target line. For law enforcement/security training, a 25 meter range is typically mandatory and may extend to 50 to 100 meters for longer target distance applications.



If shooters are allowed to advance downrange beyond the primary firing line, Combat Walls should be installed for the side-walls of the range. Using the proven design of air-space baffles, a misdirected round impacting the Combat Wall will be safely contained or redirected towards the bullet trap.

The walls, ceiling, and floor surfaces within 5 – 10 meters of the bullet trap receive most misdirected shots and should not receive acoustical treatment due to the high frequency of repair that would be required. Any surface downrange of the firing line that does receive acoustical material should have an air-space between the hard and soft surfaces, typically created with the use of wood strips 50mm thick.
