Does Your Law Enforcement Agency Need Grant Assistance?

Meggitt Training Systems understands that today’s officers rely on real-world training to succeed on the streets while maintaining their own safety. That’s why we’re the only training systems company in the industry to deliver both virtual training systems combined with live fire indoor and outdoor shooting range solutions.

Meggitt also understands that funding remains a roadblock for many departments and agencies to obtain the training equipment they require. As a way to ease some of the financial burden, Meggitt is proud to partner with PoliceGrantsHelp.com to provide free grant assistance, allowing law enforcement agencies to secure advanced training equipment. Grant assistance is a significant resource for agencies with constricted budgets to secure funding for improved departmental training.

Agencies interested in the free grants program can visit the Meggitt Training Systems website and register for grant assistance. Members of the PoliceGrantsHelp.com team then work directly with the agency to identify grant options and provide assistance throughout the grant submission process at no cost to the agency. Products like Meggitt's FATS® 100P virtual system, BlueFire® wireless weapons, the XWT GEN4 wireless target retrieval system and others can be purchased using grant funding.

Lessons Learned

You stop a vehicle for expired tags. The driver, an elderly man, exits the vehicle, retrieves a walking cane from the bed of the pickup truck, and comes towards you. He becomes irate and demands to know why he has been pulled over. You need to use your communication skills to calm the driver, who will turn violent without warning. What action will you take?

This scenario is based on an actual situation that occurred in 2014 and is one of the “Lessons Learned” courseware offerings available with the FATS® 100P and FATS® 100LE virtual training systems. Law enforcement officers may encounter any number of unpredictable, potentially explosive situations both on and off the job. To prepare them to respond effectively while adhering to departmental protocol, Meggitt’s immersive, real-world scenarios train law enforcement personnel to react decisively when the unexpected inevitably occurs.

In addition to the rapidly growing number of video scenarios offered (250 with over 1600 branching options) with the FATS 100P and 100LE, Meggitt also features a video-authoring station. This allows customers to develop customized scenarios with accurate branching and scoring for judgmental force training. The instructor can add, edit or remove video clips and frames at their discretion or based upon the training requirements. It also incorporates mouse clicks to simulate shots fired, enabling scoring verification and branch points to ensure accuracy before being loaded on the training simulator.

For departments that need to improve their marksmanship skills, the authoring station allows instructors to create new marksmanship training courses, providing system flexibility and advanced customization. To accurately score the students, the system employs target, terrain and shoot-back information, a host of branching options, including lethal hit, non-lethal hit, chemical spray, Taser®, innocent bystander hit, miss and more.

FAQ

Q. What are the top three key components in range design and development which must be properly planned from the beginning?

A.

  1. Ventilation - Due to exact laminar air flow requirements for the health of shooters and the drastic costs associated with reworking a poor design.
  2. Dynamic vs. Static Firing Lines - Due to the damage of equipment and safety hazards which are faced if incorrectly designed from the beginning, and the drastic cost of correcting an improper design.
  3. Bullet Trap - Due to the multitude of ammunition types and arms utilized within a range, safety and replacement cost issues may arise with an improper trap selection.

Q. I'm building a gun range and I'm concerned about range safety for our employees and customers. Besides baffles, guards and security line systems, what else do I need to consider?

A. In conjunction with a firing line security system, a signal light system is recommended to enhance range safety. Typically located on the shooting stall, the signal lights provide shooters with a continuous visual indication of range conditions. The system consists of three colored lights (red-amber-green), a Rangemaster call switch and a control at the range operator’s control console. The red signal light indicates to shooters to stop firing, the amber light warns shooters to be alert for a condition change, and the green light signifies the range is clear.

The range operator selects the condition light for the full range from the master control console. When the signal lights are interfaced with the firing line security system, a security violation at the firing line will activate the red signal lights at all shooting positions. The lights will remain red until the range operator resets the system. In circumstances where a shooter at the line needs the attention of the range operator, the shooter activates the rangemaster call switch that is mounted on the shooting stall.

Meggitt Training Systems holds nine patents on the GranTrap rubber bullet trap. The GranTrap design created a revolutionary advancement in bullet trap performance, using granular rubber as a containment medium and safely deenergizing incoming rounds, containing them intact with virtually no lead dust or bullet fragmentation. Meggitt's GranTrap is superior in reducing range noise by eliminating bullet impact and deceleration on steel plates.

Meggitt's patented BlueFire® virtual training weapons identify the same training diagnostics as tethered weapons, including point-of-aim, weapon status, trigger pressure and cant. The weapons are compatible with other FATS® system-controlled weapons simulators and do not require system modifications.
